About

The papers in this volume report research investigating the potentials, uses, and implications of AI technologies for language learning, teaching, assessment, and research. They were presented at the 20th anniversary Technology for Second Language Learning conference whose theme, “Advancing Technologies—Expanding Research,” signifies the provocation felt in applied linguistics to expand research in the face of continuously advancing language technologies. The papers in this volume of selected contributions from the conference illustrate some of the responses mounted by applied linguists in response to the unprecedented public display of language generation capacities observed over the previous eleven months due to open AI. Speakers at the conference acknowledged the significance of this moment in the trajectory of the field of applied linguistics.

The papers in this volume report research investigating the potentials, uses, and implications of AI technologies for language learning, teaching, assessment, and research. They were presented at the 20th anniversary Technology for Second Language Learning conference whose theme, “Advancing TechnologiesùExpanding Research,” signifies the provocation felt in applied linguistics to expand research in the face of continuously advancing language technologies. Speakers at the conference acknowledged the significance of this moment in the trajectory of the field of applied linguistics. This collection of papers, planned for publication by Iowa State University Digital Press, presents a rich sample of work from some of the pioneers who were charting this new territory in 2023.

Submission Checklist

Please refer to the 7th edition of APA Style, to find guidelines for style and formatting of the text, figures, tables, citations, references, etc. This website has a lot of information including example papers, tables, and figures.

The example professional papers on the APA Style website are journal articles, which are good examples for overall format, but for the open book project, we request that authors keep papers around 5000 words plus a 150-word abstract and appendices if needed. The 5000-word guideline does not include the abstract, appendices, or author information. For the open book, we anticipate readers will include a wide range of interested people who would be best served by more concise papers than what we are accustomed to in most of our professional journals, where papers are typically almost twice that length.

The following guidelines identify the key elements we request for each of the parts of your paper. The suggested word lengths are intended express the balance we anticipate for the paper’s contents. These and the other guidelines below are open to interpretation by authors in order to create the best design for each paper in view of its contents. We anticipate that the use of these general guidelines across all of the papers will result in ease of access for readers and an overall professional-looking open book.

Abstract (150 words)

Introduction (fewer than 1000 words)

The introduction should explain the problem in applied linguistics—language teaching and learning, language assessment, applied linguistics research, or language teacher education—that your research addresses. This section should include the following:

  • An explanation of the role of your study in addressing the problem
  • The definition of artificial intelligence that applies to your study
  • Definitions of terms and concepts that you are using to conceptualize and investigate the problem.
  • Key references to previous relevant research that provides background for your study
  • Your research questions clearly connected to the background provided in this section.

Methods (fewer than 1000 words)

The methods section should explain how you carried out the investigation: the context, participants, data, AI, other tools and materials, procedures, analysis methods.  Please be sure to make clear what data and data analysis procedures you used to address each research question. Key references on methodology should be included.

Results (around 1500-2000 words)

Present the results, again being clear about which results pertain to each research question. Please use tables and figures as needed to present results and explain what the readers should see in each table and figure. APA style indicates that tables and figures should be submitted as separate pages at the end of the document, but it is not necessary to follow this guideline. You may place the tables and figures in your text in the appropriate location if you like.

Please provide examples of language data as appropriate to convey your points concretely. You can include discussion in this section if you like or alternatively you can have a discussion section following.

Discussion (around 500 words)

If the previous section does not contain your discussion of results, please add that here. Be careful not to repeat the discussion from the previous section. Again, be sure to arrange the discussion in this section to address the research questions.

Conclusion (around 250 words)

Based on your study results and your experience with the research, project the next step(s) in the line of research you have introduced in this study.

References (around 250 words)

References for all works cited in the text. Please use the APA guidelines for formatting references and include the doi or link to the source (as shown in example papers on the APA website).

Appendices (only as needed, no word limit recommendation)

Author Information

Please provide a 150-word biographical statement for each of the authors highlighting relevant work and interests. Please include a link to your professional online site and any relevant publications, as needed.
