Abstract

Obtaining high quality data in L2 pronunciation research requires careful attention to details at multiple levels. In this paper we share our recommendations on data collection by reflecting on our experiences in a number of studies. We limit our focus to the research designs and data types that we ourselves are familiar with. In particular, we explore approaches to measuring the constructs of intelligibility, comprehensibility, accentedness, and fluency as we have operationalizedthese dimensions. After a few preliminaries, we discuss the steps in making good speech recordingsand the preparation of audio materials for listening tasks. Rating and other judgment tasks are then covered, as isthe effective administration of quasi-experimental listener tasks. A link to sample materials isprovided, including PRAAT experiment files.
