Abstract

The global science community has a number of opportunities for the establishment of cooperation for young scientists. Nevertheless, it is acknowledged that locating information regarding scholarships and networking opportunities may present a challenge. Therefore, a webinar dedicated to young scientists was organized. The webinar was an initiative of the Section of International Cooperation of the Committee of Animal Sciences and Aquaculture of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The objective of the webinar was twofold: firstly, to present opportunities for the establishment of cooperation networks, and secondly, to demonstrate the advantages of such cooperation through contact with international organizations. The portfolio of the following organizations were presented by the experts: The World's Poultry Science Association, the Animal Task Force, the European Federation of Animal Sciences (EAAP), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), European Aquaculture Society (EQS). The experts have collaborated to provide a forum for the discussion of opportunities for young researchers in the field: PhD students, undergraduate students, and early-stage researchers. The main opportunities included: organization of conferences and meetings including programs for young scientists, traveling grants, scholarships and awards for quality research. In the subsequent talk, a senior researcher delivered a presentation on the cooperation, networking and mobility successful story. In order to ensure the comprehensiveness of the narrative, the account was enriched by the incorporation of the perspectives of young researchers. Two young scientists shared their experience in relation to mobility, the founding of applications, and the most effective methods of approaching future mentors. In summary, webinar participants received useful information on career development, illustrated with examples presented from various perspectives: senior scientist, post doc and early stage researcher. The students participating in the webinar declared its usefulness, ranging from the opportunity to listen to the debate in English and meet scientists representing various organizations, to practical tips on applying for internship funding. There were 25 live participants but the recording and other resources were made freely available to further increase the outreach (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SfiYS92GF3io8neiZXu1PQ4LyGptSuWc/view) It seems that the further steps and additional capacity building should focus on the mentoring system for early stage researchers. Establishing formal mentor-mentee networks within research institutions and international organizations is a key strategy for sustaining the professional development of young scientists.
