Manufacturing of Architectural Ultra-High-Performance Panels with a Complex Geometry and Features

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to present the Manufacturing technique of architectural ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) production for precast cladding panels using an in-house mixer. There were two milestones to be achieved: Part I to achieve workability and color requirements using to produce a Mockup panel in which different materials like wood, rubber, and GFRC were used to make the molds based on specific shapes and features; and Part II to achieve the same finish and color on a full-size panel using large batches and large mixer. In phase I, two types of non-metallic fibers were used: High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) fibers; and Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) fibers. Different combinations of fiber dosage were used to get the correct flow in the ¾" ribs. Part II was carried out based on results from phase 1 which were a selection of material for molds, flowability, cost, and labor. This demonstrated the final deliverable of the extremely difficult architectural panel, with 4 different triangulations (Solid Flat, Concave Pyramid, Convex Pyramid, and ¾" thick hollow triangulation) pattern/features within one panel.
