Meeting students where they are: A community college approach to asynchronous pronunciation instruction through H5P-integrated speech recognition
Abstract
This study reports on the development, implementation, and evaluation of an English pronunciation training tool integrated into Portland Community College’s Learning Management System (LMS) for asynchronous homework practice. The tool uses H5P-based automatic speech recognition to support suprasegmental instruction for students in ESOL Communication courses. A quasi-experimental study with 12 cohorts (N = 198) compared control and experimental groups over a 10-week term across two tasks: read-aloud and spontaneous speech. Results showed no statistically significant between-group differences, although descriptive patterns suggest consistently greater gains for students using the tool, particularly at the intermediate level and on the read-aloud task. These findings warrant further controlled investigation.
