Technology and Generative AI: A Revolution for Language Learning

Authors: , , ,

Abstract

This paper describes how technological tools, and especially those connected to Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), have revolutionized applied linguistics, including spoken language and pronunciation. We describe how AI is being used in writing research and practice, in language assessment, and in the field of L2 pronunciation, where AI chatbots, Automatic Speech Recognition, Text-to-Speech, and voice cloning are causing the field to rethink options for how pronunciation can be taught and how new models of pronunciation can be imagined.
