Enhancing Oral Communication with the World-Readiness Standards: A Survival Kit for Language Instructors
Abstract
Utilizing authentic materials in language instruction not only facilitates more effective communication with native speakers but also significantly deepens learners' cultural insights and engagement. This paper focuses on creating activities for intermediate Arabic learners, crafted to align with the World-Readiness Standards (The National Standards Collaborative Board, 2015). These standards are demonstrated by connecting classroom activities to real-world contexts to bolster engagement and elevate critical thinking skills (Kusaka & Robertson, 2006). The paper begins by introducing authentic materials, the various modes of learning, and ways to increase learners' metacognitive awareness. Next, the authors outline the Five "Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities" and showcase a sequence of integrated activities designed to improve oral communication skills, including pronunciation, while enhancing both the learning experience and learner outcomes. This approach improves linguistic proficiency and prepares learners for real-world interactions, making language learning more dynamic and applicable. While this paper uses Arabic as an example, the strategies discussed herein can be applied to any other language.
