Enhancing Language Learners' Pronunciation with ChatGPT: Developing Fluency and Accuracy Through Newscast Simulations
Abstract
Pronunciation teachers continually seek innovative ways to use technology to enhance engagement in second language classrooms. This teaching tip presents an approach to help learners refine their overall speaking abilities, demonstrate vocal control and confidence, and master prosodic features critical for effective communication (Utterback, 2005). Students can use ChatGPT as a tool to generate oral news reports which are then tagged for suprasegmental features and performed via a teleprompter to simulate giving an actual newscast. This tip provides teachers with the pedagogical steps to enable language learners to develop key features used by newscasters in reporting the news: fluency, accuracy, clarity, confidence, and eye contact (Utterback, 2005) providing a fun and engaging framework for pronunciation practice. Limitations of ChatGPT for this type of pronunciation work are also discussed.
