This is a Activity/Lab and has not been peer reviewed. This is version 1 of this Activity/Lab.
This Applied Learning Activity (ALA) accompanies chapter 5, Mutation Breeding, in Plant Breeding Methods. Its purpose is to introduce mutation breeding as a tool for crop improvement using Amaranth as a case study, specifically how novel alleles can be created through induced mutagenesis when desired traits are absent or rare in existing germplasm, and how such alleles can be validated and integrated into breeding programs. The Applied Learning Activities (ALAs) and recommended readings were developed with funding provided by CIMMYT’s USAID-VACS Coalition Project under Subgrant #DCP_2025_216.
