This is a Activity/Lab and has not been peer reviewed. This is version 1 of this Activity/Lab.
This Applied Learning Activity (ALA) accompanies chapter 7, Backcrossing, in Plant Breeding Methods. Its purpose is to understand how backcrossing combined with molecular markers can be used to efficiently introgress specific major genes into elite pigeonpea cultivars. The activity emphasizes marker assisted backcrossing (MABC) as a strategy to improve disease resistance, flowering time, seed quality, and adaptation while maintaining the overall performance and farmer preferred traits of elite varieties. The Applied Learning Activities (ALAs) and recommended readings were developed with funding provided by CIMMYT’s USAID-VACS Coalition Project under Subgrant #DCP_2025_216.
