Abstract

This Applied Learning Activity (ALA) accompanies chapter 4, Techniques for Artificial Hybridization, in Plant Breeding Methods. It explains how hybridization is a central driver of genetic improvement to develop climate-resilient, farmer-preferred finger millet varieties. It examines how breeders overcome constraints on genetic variation, focuses on floral biology, anthesis timing, and hybridization techniques to determine crossing success, and shapes downstream selection and cultivar development. The Applied Learning Activities (ALAs) and recommended readings were developed with funding provided by CIMMYT’s USAID-VACS Coalition Project under Subgrant #DCP_2025_216.
