Abstract

This Applied Learning Activity (ALA) accompanies chapter 8, Inbreeding, in Plant Breeding Methods. Its purpose is to help students discuss the principles of inbreeding in Okra and how breeders can generate homozygous uniform lines to generate pure line cultivars and hybrid parent development. Students will evaluate pedigrees and bulk and single-seed descent (SSD) methods, and assess how the timing of selection, environment, and cost affect genetic gain in okra breeding programs. The Applied Learning Activities (ALAs) and recommended readings were developed with funding provided by CIMMYT’s USAID-VACS Coalition Project under Subgrant #DCP_2025_216.
