Researching Generative AI in Applied Linguistics
Description
Researching Generative AI in Applied Linguistics presents a sample of research on how generative AI (GenAI) performs for addressing issues in applied linguistics. The chapters are based on selected presentations from the 2024 Technology for Second Language Learning hybrid conference held at Iowa State University, October 24-26. They are organized into three sections that examine 1) GenAI for language learning, 2) GenAI in language assessment, and 3) the linguistic capabilities of GenAI with respect to variation, subjectivity, and pragmatics in language performance. Together, the chapters illustrate the roles GenAI may play in applied linguistics practice and underscore the need for empirical research on each one.
