The chapters in Exploring AI in Applied Linguistics invite readers to begin to see GenAI from the vantage point of applied linguists. Applied linguistics is a field dedicated to research on language-related problems that arise in the real-world contexts where languages are learned and used. Applied linguists create, choose, and refine technical approaches to the study of language that build an understanding of the language-related problems they study. The focus on language in context from relevant technical perspectives is a distinct value that applied linguistics research provides beyond the methodologies offered by other fields of study. The chapters in this volume investigate language-related, real-world issues sparked by the sudden access to GenAI that occurred in November 2022. The chapters conceptualize GenAI technology as integral to the language-related issues in real-world contexts of language learning, language assessment, language research, and language teacher education. The researchers systematically investigated how the AI would perform when prompted with such linguistic tasks as scoring ESL learners’ essays, identifying aberrant oral test responses, recognizing pragmatic distinctions in meaning, and generating reading materials for EFL teaching. The researchers observed, analyzed, and reported on language learners’ and teachers’ use of AI tools to expand their own capabilities. |
