Open generative AI (GenAI) expands the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) English language teachers need, but it is unclear exactly what teacher educators should teach and how to teach it. Our research explores materials for teaching TPACK in a professional development course introducing international English language teachers to ChatGPT in 2023. The materials consist of videos demonstrating how to create reading texts that meet teachers’ genre, content, and level specifications and how to use ChatGPT to assist students with their writing (e.g., through brainstorming activities and providing corrective feedback). Our team of six English language teacher-researchers, each with experience in one of six countries (China, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates) independently followed a protocol directing them to watch the two demonstrations on ChatGPT and then systematically document their interactions with ChatGPT and responses to questions about the experience. The responses are interpreted for evaluating the acceptability of the demonstration for introducing generative AI to English language teachers across a variety of contexts and for making recommendations for revisions in the professional development course to better teach the generative AI components of TPACK. The results also contribute toward building an understanding of the role of generative AI in TPACK for English language teachers across international teaching contexts. |
