Meat and Muscle Biology (MMB) is committed to ensuring that all published content is accessible to the widest possible audience, including individuals with disabilities. In accordance with updated requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act Title II, public institutions—including university-affiliated journals—must meet enhanced digital accessibility standards by April 24, 2026.
To support compliance with these requirements, MMB is implementing updated accessibility standards for all manuscript submissions.
What This Means for Authors
All submitted manuscripts must now include accessible descriptions of visual content, including:
- Figures
- Graphical abstracts
- Supplementary visual materials
Each visual element must include alternative text (alt text) that clearly and concisely describes the content and its scientific meaning.
Use of AI for Accessibility
Authors may use AI-assisted tools to help generate alt text; however:
- All AI-generated descriptions must be reviewed, edited, and approved by the authors
- Authors are fully responsible for ensuring descriptions are accurate, complete, and meaningful
- AI tools must not replace scientific judgment or interpretation
Editorial Oversight
Submissions that do not meet accessibility requirements may be:
- Returned to authors for revision prior to peer review
- Delayed in processing until compliance is achieved
MMB editorial staff will work with authors, when needed, to ensure accessibility standards are met.
Our Commitment
These updates reflect MMB’s commitment to:
- Inclusive and equitable dissemination of scientific knowledge
- Compliance with evolving federal accessibility standards
- Best practices in scholarly publishing
We appreciate the cooperation of our authors in supporting these important efforts.
