Abstract

How can anybody write a column about the Archives Listserv? The Listserv is like a series of waves and ripples of communication. The waves swell, peak, and subside, often without any feeling of consensus or resolution. My first column introduced the Listserv to readers, thereby bypassing the issue of how to deal with it on a regular basis. This column, which covers the three months from August through October 1993, must confront it directly. Since it is impossible to summarize or condense the Listserv in a comprehensive manner, I will cover several topics in each column, ignoring other topics entirely. Some will be big topics, debated heatedly over the course of several weeks; others will be smaller topics such as requests for help on a specific question. This column deals with four such topics. On the “big” side, archival outreach and the openness of the Society of American Archivists (SAA) to newcomers and new ideas were the topics chosen. Newspaper indexing and the question of citing postings on the Listserv were chosen as “small” issues.
