Conservation Information

Abstract
Last June, David Gelernter, a Yale professor of computer science, opened a letter bomb. In the October issue of Conservation Administration News, Winston Atkins and Ellen Belcher, Mellon Preservation Interns at Yale, present an account of their efforts to salvage the books and papers in Gelernter’s office damaged by the bomb. Naturally, efforts were first devoted to preserving Gelernter, rather than his possessions, and to trying to discover who had sent him the bomb. Atkins and Belcher decided to write an account of their experiences because the efforts of the investigators adversely affected their abilities to salvage materials, and they felt that better communication could have improved the situation.
