Archives Listserv
- Mark L. Shelstad
Abstract
The ongoing federal budget problem and resulting shutdown of several federally‑funded repositories regarded as “non‑essential” services led many to question why archivists are considered, in the words of one list member, “unnecessary frills.” To combat this undesirable image, many suggested using advocacy and political involvement. One list member also urged archivists to remember that records support historical research and also document corporate memory and provide evidence and accountability; their value and use are thus not limited to small segments of the population.
