Abstract
On one typical dreary New England day in February, the cold I had been suffering from for several days took on a new intensity. I finally broke down and decided I had to get medical attention. After the mandatory paperwork and the requisite one hour wait, I entered the examination room and found the doctor deeply engrossed in my file. He stopped, looked at me, and said, “I don’t have anything personal against you, but who is going to pay the bill?” With some surprise, I answered that I was employed by a college and covered under their health insurance plan. He said, “you mean colleges are now employing anarchists?” As an archivist, I have been plagued by this misreading for all my professional life.
