Abstract

In February of this year, the Library of Congress announced that the House and Senate appropriations committees had approved their request for $1.8 million to continue their pilot mass deacidification program. LC is now using the Bookkeeper™ process, and plans to use most of the funding to deacidify 36,000 books per year for the next two years. Unlike some past trials, many of the books sent for deacidification during this two year period will be from LC’s permanent collection. Bookkeeper is a gaseous deacidification method under development since 1988. Bookkeeper does not use Diethyl Zinc (DEZ), which is combustible under certain conditions.
