Midwestern Archivists Oppose MAC Carlin Nomination

Abstract
The governing council of the Midwest Archives Conference, the largest regional archival organization in the United States, voted at its May meeting to oppose President Clinton’s nomination of John W. Carlin as Archivist of the United States. The Midwest Archives Conference (MAC) has determined that Carlin does not meet the qualifications outlined in the 1984 law creating a presidentially appointed, Senate‑confirmed U.S. Archivist. The law indicates that the national archivist “shall be appointed without regard to political affiliation and solely on the basis of professional qualifications required to perform the duties and responsibilities of the office of Archivist.” Carlin is the former governor of Kansas with a degree in dairy science. He also played a role in the 1992 Clinton presidential election campaign.
