Advocate Or Abdicate? MAC As Advocate

Abstract
When MAC Council adopted a resolution at its May 1995 meeting opposing the nomination of John Carlin as Archivist of the United States, it ventured somewhat uneasily into uncharted territory. MAC was the first of many state and regional archival organizations to state publicly their opposition to the Carlin nomination because of his lack of professional qualifications and the fear that this partisan appointment would “further politicize the office of Archivist of the United States” (Karen Benedict). But MAC’s “first foray into the advocacy arena” (to use Anita Weber’s words) raised the question of whether it is appropriate for MAC to take on the role of advocate.
