Abstract

In the late 1990s, a small group of social work students from Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in Ypsilanti formed Tri-Pride, a student organization where LGBTQ master’s degree students could connect with each other. In February 1997, the group organized a raffle fund-raiser for a Halt the Hate vigil and placed an order with a local Ypsilanti print shop to have the tickets made. However, when the print shop owners realized the nature of the job, they refused service due to their religious beliefs. Following the advice of their faculty sponsor, Tri-Pride met with the owners of the print shop to discuss the exchange, but to no avail.
