Abstract

In recent months, my reading has gravitated to the subject of professionalism. This is a fascinating issue that cuts across broad areas of twentieth century American life, looking at how increasing numbers of occupational groups go through a process to conceptualize and project themselves as distinct professions. The topic is particularly interesting because it has been approached from many different angles, such as social anthropology, history, psychology, and sociology. Indeed, the literature is so thick that even defining what constitutes professional behavior is very troubling, although the essence seems to lie in a matrix that includes the specialization of work, technical expertise, and demands for occupational autonomy and control.
