Abstract
For many years I have been troubled by the difficulty of reconciling model archival techniques to what is possible in the real world of daily archival work. It is not particularly difficult to define the ideal or optimal way to accomplish any archival function. Whether it be arrangement, description, or preservation, we can all recite the textbook standards, but when we come to apply this knowledge to actual practice, we encounter such great difficulties that we often question the validity of the body of archival theory. The practical problems in, and lack of resources for, daily archival work require us to make so many compromises that one questions whether archival integrity can be maintained. Equally troubling is the fact that an occasional response to the apparent inapplicability of archival ideals and goals is to reject basic archival theories as inadequate and in need of total restructuring.
