Statement on Personnel Policies
- Midwest Archives Conference (Midwest Archives Conference)
Abstract
Archivists and the institutions which employ them are charged with the tasks of selecting, preserving, and providing access to vital information. To carry out these tasks most efficiently, archivists and their employers must recognize that they share a broad range of mutual obligations and responsibilities. It is the responsibility of the professional archivist to perform his or her duties effectively and to work to further the overall goals of the employing institution. It is the institution's responsibility to compensate its employees fairly and to encourage and reward their professional development. It is their mutual responsibility to work toward equitable solutions in all areas of conflict. To facilitate this process, institutions which employ archivists should develop and implement formal personnel policies. Such policies protect both the employee and the employer and encourage minimal disruption of routine if conflicts develop.
