Abstract

As numerous television documentaries, newspaper articles, and magazine covers have noted, this year marks the bicentennial of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Born and raised in Kentucky for the first several years of his life, Lincoln spent his adolescence in Indiana and lived in Illinois for most of his adult life. One can thus argue that Lincoln was the first U.S. president who was truly a product of the Midwest (with apologies to Ohio's adopted son, William Henry Harrison, a native of Virginia). As perhaps the most prominent historical figure in U.S. history and an enduring cultural icon, the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln are well documented by archival resources on the World Wide Web.
