Abstract
Contemporary St. Louis is a diverse, complex metropolitan area, and its history is equally multifaceted. The city has existed as part of three modern nations: as a colony under Spain and France, and then as part of the United States following the Louisiana Purchase. Many significant U.S. events dealing with slavery, exploration, and sports have their roots in St. Louis.
