Abstract

Okay, so microfilm isn't dead or dying a diseased death... or is it? Perhaps the truth is really closer to the account of Mark Twain's demise: the report of its death is greatly exaggerated. The answer also might depend on the person to whom one talks. Die-hard digital-imaging experts will reference the incredible explosion in technology and its capabilities to rebuff the necessity or future of microfilm. Traditionalists will champion the longevity and stability of microfilm—if stored in the right manner. And, face it, marketing statistics do demonstrate a decline in sales of photographic film overall, including microfilm. Yet, several micrographics suppliers worldwide report seeing a shift in sales patterns, with increases in such items as reader/printer toner, film storage cabinets, and film scanning equipment.
