"Mining" the Web for Primary Resources on Midwest Mines and Miners
- Noah Lenstra
Abstract
Agriculture and homesteading are typically the first images that spring to mind when one thinks about the settlement of the Midwest by Europeans, yet mineral extraction was also among the principal instigators for migration to the region. Coal, lead, zinc, gold, copper, and many other mineral resources have been mined extensively in the Midwest, and primary sources documenting these mining experiences have been made available on-line by a variety of archival institutions in the region. This article, organized by type of mineral extracted, briefly summarizes some of the digital collections that explore the mining experience in the Midwest.
