Doing It Yourself ... Or Not

Abstract

It's fair to say that most archives house a variety of media. Some even have the rarest of collectibles such as crystoleum photos and cylindrical recordings alongside their more prolific brethren: gelatin silver prints and cassette audiotapes. No matter how rare or varied the collections, we all want to preserve them for posterity. That's our job, at least in part. The challenge is to preserve not only the objects themselves, but also the information recorded on them. To do that means converting, reformatting, or migrating the information from one inherently flawed medium to another. Whatever word one chooses, the idea is the same: move the information from one format to another so it can be accessed in perpetuity.
