"Archivist, Assess Thyself": On-line Tools for Preservation Assessments

Abstract

Mold. Insects. Acid. Do you know what lurks in your archives? Whether you need to monitor the deterioration of a few select items, or identify trends throughout the entire collection, a preservation assessment can be a valuable tool for identifying preservation problems, determining the appropriate method of treatment, selecting and prioritizing items for treatment, creating a budget for preservation programming, and demonstrating need for grants and other external funding. But for many archives, limitations of time, resources, staff, and expertise often mean that building a customized survey tool from scratch and undertaking a comprehensive collection assessment are at best impractical, or, perhaps more likely, wholly unfeasible.
