Abstract
MAC has a well- and hard-earned reputation as a frugal professional association. Over the years, it has put notable pressure on its meeting committees, elected and appointed officers, and publications editors to leverage, sometimes heroically, each dollar spent. Annual dues, which began at $2 in 1972, increased in small increments over the decades and usually against some resistance. As a result, MAC members are the happy inheritors of a legacy of low meeting fees and membership dues. This tradition has made MAC, its publications, and its conferences accessible to a large number and wide range of archivists who may not otherwise have been able to participate in the archival profession to a similar degree. This benefit has accrued especially to students and new professionals.
