Abstract

Slide photography has been around a little more than 70 years. In 1936 Eastman Kodak introduced Kodachrome color film for 35 mm slides. Kodachrome film was a color transparency mounted in a frame for viewing with a light source. A year after the film was introduced, Kodak unveiled a top-loading "gravity fed" slide projector-the Kodaslide. Their first automatic slide projector, the Cavalcade, was introduced in 1959. Two years later the Kodak Carousel projector with a round tray holding 80 slides hit the market. Over time the capacity of the popular Carousel expanded to 140 slides. While the production of Kodak slide projectors and accessories halted in 2004, billions of slides still exist in archives, libraries, and private homes.
