Abstract

Exactly 90 years ago, U.S. involvement in World War I was intensifying. The first troops in the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) arrived in France in June 1917, and by May 1918, more than one million U.S. soldiers, marines, pilots, and sailors were serving in Europe. Initially unprepared for war in terms of training, equipment, and supplies, the AEF did not immediately join the fighting. During the spring and summer of 1918, however, the U.S. forces strengthened the Allied Powers and turned the tide of the war, forcing an armistice with the Central Powers by the end of the year. Although relatively brief, American involvement in the Great War is an undeniable milestone in United States history and a topic that is well documented by numerous archival resources on the World Wide Web.
