Abstract

Columbus, Ohio, our host city for the MAC Annual Meeting, 2007, may be a bit of a mystery for some of you. Although the city and its suburbs are well known within our profession as the home of OCLC and birthplace of Dublin Core, and The Ohio State University is a household name for sports, very few are familiar with the rich history of the city. The state capitol for nearly two hundred years, Columbus was a popular home for immigrants after the National Road and the Ohio and Erie Canal both reached the city during the 1830s. For many years a manufacturing town, in recent decades Columbus has become the corporate home to many major companies, with Money Magazine ranking the city as one of the 10 best places to live in the U.S. A great deal more, however, can be learned about the history and culcure of Columbus by reviewing local on-line archival resources.
