Abstract

I have been trying to summarize the best and worst of the Archives Listserv on a quarterly basis since the fall of 1995. The List has featured helpful and thoughtful messages in the middle of the rants, rebukes, off-topic, and off-color postings that are common to any online discussion group; it is a representation of ourselves, our behavior and our characteristics. The List is, however, only a small portion of the whole by which archivists, librarians, and records managers communicate with each other. The line by Pope captures what is most often overlooked when we discuss and analyze what has been happening on this electronic bulletin board: that even with the widespread use of technology at work and at home, only certain portions (and an especially few individuals) of the profession, by choice or otherwise, are represented by their participation on the List. What also passes for information is buttressed largely by opinion, with a glaring absence of citation of sources.
