Abstract
In the 183O's the Methodists, like members of other religious groups, became increasingly concerned with providing education on the college level in both Christian studies and 'the liberal arts. In 1837 the Indiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (none of whose ministers were college-educated) established Indiana Asbury University (since 1884 DePauw University) in Greencastle, Indiana.
