Abstract

Imagine this: a third-grade student sitting in class and learning about the legacy of farming in Indiana. Click: the teacher launches an image of the painting Indiana Potato Planters by the artist Cecil Head. She then clicks on another link that launches a historical map relating to the time of both the painting and the point in history the lesson covers. In another classroom a fifth-grade student sits in a science class studying a unit on weather. The teacher projects images of paintings by the English Romantic painter Joseph Mallard William Turner (1775–1851), relating the atmospheric qualities of the painting to the lesson at hand. Or, perhaps in a math class, a student is viewing the planes and lines found in the artwork of the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) or Dutchman Piet Mondrian (1872–1944).
