MAC 2001 Minority Scholarship Award Recipient

Abstract
I am a Lakota of mixed ancestry from the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Several years ago questions about my ancestry compelled me to broaden my knowledge of Lakota history and culture. My first attempt to document my family history was through my master’s thesis in history from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff (1994). By studying intermarriage among biracial Lakota women I was able to incorporate oral history interviews of my mother and two of her cousins with interviews of other elderly women living both on and off the Rosebud, Pine Ridge, and Cheyenne River Reservations in South Dakota. It was a valuable learning experience.
