Abstract

Digital technologies and the ever-increasing popularity of network access have irrevocably changed the information landscape. The process of digital preservation changes rapidly and without warning: it is a means rather than an end. The end, or purpose, is to advance preservation programs. Today, all types of libraries and historical institutions, ranging from government agencies to institutions of higher education, are quickly developing the technological infrastructure and content to make digital access ubiquitous, reliable, and fast. The Internet is the agora for research, teaching, expression, publication, and communication. Digital libraries today provide remote access to unique collections from their institutions through the digitization process, and libraries and archives have changed in order to be able to serve the demands of society for primary information.
