Abstract

Geospatial data are information that is linked to geographic coordinates. When in digital form, these data often serve as a computerized map. When geospatial data are entered in a Geographic Information System (GIS), it becomes an extremely robust resource because various types of data can be linked for complex analysis. For example, precinct-level election results can be linked to precinct boundary lines, county and township political boundaries, state and federal legislative district lines, road maps, aerial photographs, and census data. Each series of geospatial data stored in a GIS is called a “layer.” GIS users decide which layer(s) of data they want to analyze or compare; the software can represent the data pictorially to whatever level of detail is desired (such as one house on one street, a whole county, or an entire state). In addition, there are data and metadata in the background that can be used for statistical analysis and source verification.
