Accessing Local History: Digital Archives Web Sites

Abstract

The duties of an archivist can vary greatly from repository to repository and can include everything from records management to educational outreach. However, I never expected to be doing what has become a significant part of my job at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee libraries. Among those duties is the development of what we initially called “instructional enhancement aids” or “educational curriculum guides.” These consist of copies of primary archival sources organized under a specific historical subject to be used by teachers at all levels to enhance their students’ learning experience. These guides are especially useful in teaching students about local history and introducing them to primary sources.
