Preservation Essentials
- Marta O'Neill
Abstract
These days, most archives probably have some type of preservation program, or at least some preservation activity occurring on a consistent basis. Larger institutions that can afford fully equipped labs and permanent, full-time staff generally have a defined program with strategic plans targeting "at risk" items or collections. Smaller archives with tighter budgets may have limited preservation activity. Finally, newly-established archival institutions may be cognizant of the need for or are trying to determine appropriate preservation action, but are unsure where to begin. Regardless of size or circumstance, many institutions habitually operate on the basis of past practice. Preservation action may occur, but often on an ad hoc or "on demand" basis. Unfortunately, it might occur only after a disaster. Tight budgets also directly affect the level of preservation activity an institution can consistently perform.
