Abstract

During the past decade, the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections has developed into a vitally important tool for locating manuscripts. Before the appearance of the NHPC's Guide to Archives and Manuscripts in the United States in 1961 and the first NUCMC volume the following year, researchers could locate pertinent materials only by visiting numerous libraries and archives, by firing off a barrage of letters to the most likely institutions, or by poring tediously through hundreds of guides to the holdings of individual repositories. Most institutions had no comprehensive guides or the guides were badly outdated, and many collections were in unexpected locations, so researchers inevitably failed to learn about some collections that would have proved useful.
