Abstract
George Talbot opened the workshop session in the Iconographic Section of the Wisconsin State Historical Society with a slide presentation of a representative group from the Society's collection of 500,000 photographs. These illustrated the social history emphasis he is developing, especially from the work of amateur photographers who capture the lifestyles of ordinary people. He raised the point that the interpretation Michael Lesy made in Wisconsin Death Trip of the Van Schaick photographs from the Society's collection was open to serious question.
