What Are You Collecting These Days?

Abstract

In this age of massive institutional and organizational document production with its commensurate archival specialization we would do well to give serious consideration to the question of how adequately does this mass of documentation reflect post-mid-century American society. What do we really know about the personal lives and opinions of the millions of Americans now reposing under fields of tombstones, whose fleeting existence is documented only by faded school yearbook photos, brief notations in the records of the register of vital statistics and a capsule obituary?
