Abstract
In 1965 the National Historical Publications Commission polled American historians concerning whose papers should be published as "part of the national historical heritage." Not surprisingly, Booker Taliaferro Washington was the only highly ranked nonpolitical figure and black man, twelfth in a list of more than a hundred.
