WTMJ-TV is the NBC-affiliated television station located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and has broadcasted relevant news stories for over 50 years. At the UWM Archives, original footage of new stories ranges from 1950 to 1980 and hold content on the Milwaukee Braves; the civil rights movement in Milwaukee during the 1960s; local businesses such as Allis-Chalmers, the Pabst, Schlitz, and Miller Breweries; and national and international politicians and celebrities who visited Milwaukee. As interest in WTMJ footage grows, there remains little knowledge on how contemporary reference tools and online platforms can ignite engagement and education to users. The purpose of this research project is to explore and re-imagine reference opportunities using WTMJ footage. With various online platforms, this analysis leads to valuable conversation surrounding the importance of preserving WTMJ footage and the influence of online reference for archival material.
